Book Review: Firelight by Sophie Jordan.

Firelight (Firelight, #1)Firelight by Sophie Jordan.
Book Summary:
A hidden truth.

Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.
Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki, a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.
Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.
Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

Liana's Summary: Jacinda is a draki, descendant of dragons. She is reckless and yearns for freedom. One day, she meets Will- a hunter that hunts her kind. He's dangerous, she knows. I've been wanting to read this book for a LONG LONG time. (I think I'm going through the phase of reading books I've been wanting to read for a LONG LONG time. Yay!) Anyways, it was great. It was freaking awesome. I totally loved the idea and everything. I love fire-breathers, which makes everything awesome. And better, the romance was perf.
So, the protagonist is going through both Internal and External conflict. She's really strong and persistent, but sometimes you can't help but be annoyed at her sometimes. Anyways, her internal conflict is what she wants- she can't decide. Her external conflict is her mother and sister. She's trying to consider them, but they just think the total opposite. They want her to get rid of her inner draki and live as a normal human- just like them. But she doesn't want to. That's what I like about her, because she kept hanging on no matter how much hardships she went through to do it. If she forgot about her inner draki I would be ranting right now about how she's the worst protagonist ever.
So, in the first paragraph, I indicated that I loved the romance. Okay, there are different types of romance.
1- Love at first sight.
2-Hate each other at first, Love each other later.
3- Overboard I-just-want-to-have-sex romance.
4-Awkward romance. Annoying attraction towards each other.
5- Too forward romance.
6- Friends at first, lovers later.

That's not even all, but that's all I'm listing right now.
In this case, it was 1 and a little bit of 5. Not that much of 5 that I got annoyed, though. I mean, I don't really like love-at-first-sights, but this was kind of different. Because they have this awkward inexplicable attraction towards each other that causes them to have love at first sight. You know? Anyways, it was JUST RIGHT. Liana approves.
Okay, I know that this is a love triangle. But I don't see who in their right minds would love Cassian. (Unless I'm wrong and he turns uber-hot-and-nice-and-reasonable-and-lovable in book 2 and 3. I SHALL SEE. Even if Cassian is an awesome name.. But for now I'm sticking to Team Will. WILL! I love that name because of Infernal Devices. LOLOL. WILL.

I finished this book in 4 hours. This is what I love about Sunday mornings. I have time to read a WHOLE book. So like, yeah. I finished in one sitting.
Anyways, I already downloaded the ebooks to book 2 and 3. Will be reading it later. Here, I'll share too. The files are EPUB.

Book 1: Firelight. http://www.epubbud.com/book.php?g=AN6TJ6XG
Book 2: Vanish. http://www.epubbud.com/book.php?g=LBTNEG3C
Book 3: Hidden. http://www.epubbud.com/book.php?g=3PAYB34X
Interesting titles, right! I love epubbud. Epubbud is my main ebook source. omg. Okay, I suppose it's time for quotes! I have a few.

"I'm hit."

"A shutter falls over his eyes,.."
Idiottttttttt. This is the part where you get annoyed with the main character.

"Look," he grumbles, "his eyes angry. Defensive. "I just wanted to see where you live."
Stalker!
"Then he kisses me. I'm too weak to resist."
She's 'too weak.'
"Not Cassian. I don't need Cassian to rescue me."
No sirree.

"He can't be here."

"She beats a fist against her thigh.."
Brat. omg.

"You were like burning firelight.."
I suddenly get the title. That awesome moment when you understand the title!

"A hunter in love with his prey.."

"Stop! Stop it!"
What annoys me is that she can't do anything about it but yell stop.
---------

And that, is all!

Book Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.

The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle, #1)
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.
Book Summary: “There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.” It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Liana's Summary: Blue Sargent has always been told that she would kill her true love when they kiss. All the time. It's not even fake- her family is full of psychics. So, when she meets Adam, she has to literally tell Adam not to kiss her- that he'll die. And then she starts to feel something inexplicable towards Gansey. The Aglionby boys are on a quest- and in this book, Maggie Stiefvater takes you through this quest- this book- The Raven Boys.

Rate(1-10): 8.5

I've only read M. Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races, and when I saw this, I wanted to read it immediately- I wanted to see for myself of if she has a different writing style in every one of her books.

Anyways, guess what! Liana says more romance. (: They didn't even kiss. It was so depressing oh my god I can't even. Apparently Blue was going to kill her true love if she kissed them. I really appreciated the mini-romance between Blue and Gansey, but then Adam was like right there. Holla, he's hot too. And he actually likes her a lot- he even told her. He got her flowers and everything and told her he wanted to kiss her but she said "No, I don't want to harm you." Sigh.

So, every end of every chapter was beautifully written- they were all suspenseful, which just CAUSES a reader to want to read the next chapter already. Perfection! It all made up for the romance's absence.

Also, the author does a ridiculously GREAT job of foreshadowing you just KNOW what's going to happen. The imminent events are predictable- gasp!

I really like this book better than The Scorpio Races. I mean, The Scorpio Races? I didn't even know what was happening the whole time except for the end-ish. (Where the romance began.) Yes, this is how teen YA readers are, ok. More romance more romance more romance. We are so expectant.

If you read the summary, you get the impression that Raven Boys(Aglionby students) are rich snob man-whore jerks. But they're actually really nice. Well, at least Gansey and his friends are.

This book's plot and setting may be set differently from The Scorpio Races, but the protagonists are REALLY alike. Blue is a really cool name. I don't know what's with the book characters that thought it strange. LOL.
I have yet to read Stiefvater's Shiver.

And I guess that's all- it's time for quotes.

"..this is the year you'll fall in love."

"And two, stay away from Aglionby boys, because they were bastards."
Well. Okay.

"So he's a man-whore."
That's nice.

"Both of Whelk's girlfriends left him."
Ooooou, snap!

"Like Ronan, Adam studied relentlessly, because his future life did depend on it."
Just like me. I think I'm known as the insane-study-study-study-book-girl now. LOL.

"I am invisible."

"Peeing."

"..she wanted to feel his skin pressed against hers, both of their pulses rapid and uncertain."
Uh huh. Keep goin'.

"Puppy."

one-does-not-simply-a - One does not simply call their father "puppy".

"..seems to have broken his thumb on a gun."

image

"NO."

image

"Home shit home."

"..Adam's arm was too slow to protect his face."

"..he hated Adam's hideous father and.."

image

Blue sighed. "Jane."
Okay, what's wrong with the name Blue?

"Also, Neeve hadn't tied him tightly enough."

Follow Friday #10!

FF 2012 Feature & Follow #122The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read.

This week's features are Ramblings of a Coffee Adicted Writer and Paranormal Romance.
Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

Well, sometimes, when the book is really good, I'm really happy when I see something like that happen in another book, as long as the author uses their own style- not just like, Oh, I'm going to change the character names and use the same exact plot and call it my own. I'm sorry to say this but I really hate fanfictions. I just HATE HATE HATE fanfictions. Not only because I hate erotica (ahem ahem- most fanfictions ARE like that.), it's because fanfictions always run wild and they ruin the characters I already got to know. So yeah. Anyways.

If you follow me, just comment below and I'll be more than glad to follow back! Happy Friday and happy reading!

Book Review: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

The Fault in Our Stars The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
Book Summary: Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

Liana's Summary: Hazel is diagnosed with cancer. Augustus is sick as well. When the two meet, they both know that they were meant to be- that their romance means much more than people think. They both know that they're bound to die someday, because of the deadly poison in their body. John Green takes you through the story of Augustus and Hazel, with no other choice than to be separated at the end.

Rate(1-10): 10

This book was great. Been wanting to read it for a long time.
When my friends were fangirling really hard about this book, I really wanted to read it. And I've gotten this book as a recommendation several times. So then when my friend said she was going to the bookstore, I told her to get this book for me. (Along with 7 other books.. Which I paid for, so no worries.)

And then I started to read it. This morning. And finished 3 hours later. I have to tell you that it was GREAT. Fantabulous. Absolutely realistic and awesome and all that. The Goodreads rating. Look at that rating. Look at how much people read it.

The writing is really good. It captivated me, as it would to hundreds and thousands of other readers. I love it when a book has a good writer. Which leads me to the point of why I really like paranormal/dystopian/fantasy books, because there are only a handful of really good writers out there, and I might as well read my favorite genres all the time and not have to face the tedium of a boring writer AND a boring plot. Which explains at all why I read John Green, David Levithan, and Nicholas Sparks. Because even if their genre isn't exactly my all-time favorite, their writing makes up for it, making the plot INTERESTING.

So, I knew this book was going to be sad. So it didn't get any tears out of me. But then the thing was- a reader expects THIS to make them cry, THIS specific character to just die and leave us all alone, but the book just takes you on a whole other road, saying, nope, you guessed wrong. This character is dying instead.

It's a great illustration of how it feels to lose someone you care about to cancer. But I would love to read a book once in a while that's not so tragedic. Miracles can happen.

So, I have a comment about Augustus's (main male character) 'metaphor.' He puts cigarettes in his mouth but he doesn't light them. He says, "Death is right between my teeth but it's not killing me." I think that's pretty smart right there.

And, yeah. I think I should get started on the quotes.

"I think he's hurting her boob."
omg. LOL.

"Oh, my God, you just ruined the whole thing."

image

"Four fifty-three."

"OH MY GOD DO THEY GET MARRIED OR NOT OH MY GOD WHAT IS THIS"
Ohmygoodness I love Augustus already.

"I'm in love with you,"

 image

"And then we were kissing."
