Book Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl by Rainbow RowellFangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Book Summary: A coming-of-age tale of fanfiction, family, and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan.... But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she's really good at it. She and her twin, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fanfiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.

Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend; a fiction-writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world; a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words...and she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Liana's Summary: Cather Avery and her sister, Wren, were so close before college. But now? Wren doesn't want to have Cather as her roommate anymore. She doesn't want to be involved with Simon Snow anymore. Cath lives with her new roommate, Reagan, who doesn't seem to like her at all. Reagan has a cute boyfriend.. or many cute boyfriends.

I want Simon Snow to be an actual thing. God, Rainbow Rowell. I demand you write all 8 books out.

Yes, I totally thought that Simon and Baz were Draco and Snape before reading this book. Now that I think about it, ew. Draco and Snape. I don't even like Draco enough to ship him with anyone

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS SO FUCKING CUTE. Rainbow's name is cute. The title is cute. The cover art is cute. The freaking font in the book is cute.

I'll admit it, throughout the whole book I thought somebody was gonna die. Or Nick was going to be a big ass pervert and something would happen or whatever. I thought Wren was going to die of alcohol poisoning. I thought Cath's dad was gonna die. I'm a morbid person. Or maybe I've just been reading too much John Green and Nicholas Sparks.. But, spoiler alert: nobody died.

This was a really authentic story, and I'm just so in love with Levi and Cath because they are so cute and oh my god and the sisterly bonding and the roommate bonding with Reagan and ahhhhh so cute.

Just one word for this entire book. Cute.

I'm just glad I read this before college. Totally know what to expect now. (Cute college boys. I've been expecting that. Levi is so fucking perfect despite all his so called imperfections.)

I have to say that Cath is a true fangirl, and I've found bits of myself in her personality as well. You know, being attached to fictional characters. Me. So authentic I'm gonna cry.

I've had this huge anti-fanfiction bias before reading this book, mainly because I don't think the fanfictions that I've read really give enough respect to the real characters and the author. But Cath just takes it to a whole new level.

That's pretty much all I have to say. BUT, FORREAL. READ THIS BOOK!

  1. OMG I desperately wanted Simon Snow to be a real thing too!! I checked it online and was mighty disappointed to discover it really WAS made up :((
Though, to be completely honest, like you I am a bit anti to fanfiction and I think we might not have been so happy with the fanfiction in Fangirl if it were about a real series we know and love :/
But this book was just so darned cute!! to bad collages where I am from are very very different to those here LOL
    Great review! :)
