Guest Post:Some of the first stories my mom ever read to me were ones found in the Bible. I found each of them very interesting, but the ones that fascinated me the most were the stories about angels and demons. At a very young age I asked questions that most children wouldn’t even think of, “What made a soul worthy for either Heaven or Hell?” The whole concept of Hell terrified me. I couldn’t seem to understand why Lucifer: God’s most beloved angel, would rather rot in Hell than be celebrated in Heaven. It didn’t make sense to me. Neither did Hell. What exactly is it? Every description I was ever told didn’t explain much. There was no answer, but that Hell is a horrible pit of sorrow. Lucifer was a half-written villain to me that I couldn’t seem to understand. I began writing “The Blackwell Family Secret: The Guardians of Sin” as a way to give me the answers I sought out when I was that little boy. I wanted to convey the aspect of Good and Evil, and a boy who was heading down a wicked path, but journeying to find the light of God.
I found biblical stories to have somewhat of a fantasy concept to them. They were lessons, but they were enriched with dragons, unicorns, angels, and demons. I have always been an avid reader of fantasy novels, and I incorporated some of my favorite aspects of fantasy into religion to create this story.
In my freshmen year of college this story hit me, the Guardians of the Seven Deadly Sins. This single thought took me back to when I was the young boy listening to my mother’s stories. I wanted to write about a character, a teenage boy, who was going to fight his way through Hell by challenging the Guardians of Sin to find his lost faith.
I didn’t write this story right away. I was only eighteen years old and wasn’t nearly ready to do so. For six years this story ran in my head like a movie playing in my mind’s eye. I knew it was going to be a dark story and I wasn’t in the mindset. It wasn’t until I was twenty-four did I start to write “The Blackwell Family Secret.” I was going through a horrible depression, during which some awful things started to happen to me. I couldn’t seem to pull myself out of this spiraling funk. I started writing this story as a way to deal with my depression, and needless to say, I turned something horrible into something wonderful that changed my life forever. I really felt like I was Nicholas Blackwell, the main character to my novel. I was the boy who fought through darkness to find the light.

Synopsis:
