Book Review: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Fahrenheit 451Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Goodreads Synopsis: The terrifyingly prophetic novel of a post-literate future. Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to burn books, which are forbidden, being the source of all discord and unhappiness. Even so, Montag is unhappy; there is discord in his marriage. Are books hidden in his house? The Mechanical Hound of the Fire Department, armed with a lethal hypodermic, escorted by helicopters, is ready to track down those dissidents who defy society to preserve and read books. The classic dystopian novel of a post-literate future, Fahrenheit 451 stands alongside Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World as a prophetic account of Western civilization’s enslavement by the media, drugs and conformity. Bradbury’s powerful and poetic prose combines with uncanny insight into the potential of technology to create a novel which, decades on from first publication, still has the power to dazzle and shock.

Book Review: Inheritance by Malinda Lo. (Adaptation #2)

Inheritance (Adaptation #2)Inheritance by Malinda Lo.
(Adaptation #2)
Book Summary: The triangular spaceship hovered motionless in the sky above Reese Holloway’s house, as inscrutable as a black hole. It had seemed like a good idea when they were inside: to tell the truth about what happened to them at Area 51. It didn’t seem like such a good idea now.

Reese and David are not normal teens—not since they were adapted with alien DNA by the Imria, an extraterrestrial race that has been secretly visiting Earth for decades. Now everyone is trying to get to them: the government, the Imria, and a mysterious corporation that would do anything for the upper hand against the aliens.

Beyond the web of conspiracies, Reese can’t reconcile her love for David with her feelings for her ex-girlfriend Amber, an Imrian. But her choice between two worlds will play a critical role in determining the future of humanity, the Imria’s place in it, and the inheritance she and David will bring to the universe.

In this gripping sequel to Adaptation, Malinda Lo brings a thoughtful exploration of adolescence, sexuality, and “the other” to a science fiction thriller that is impossible to put down.

Liana's Summary: Reese has been trying to hide from the press ever since she and David were about to tell the complete truth. They're bombarding her with questions! As if Reese didn't have enough problems, she's trapped between Amber and David. She likes David, yes. He's cute, and nice. But what about Amber? Can she work this whole thing out? Before both of them turn away?

Rate(1-10): 8

Let me just thank Cynthia right here and right now for letting me borrow her ARC. LOL.

I think this was a fairly well-written sequel. Adaptation is the kind of book that you know will have a sequel-- after all, the ending.

There were a few things that I liked and disliked about this book.

I disliked:
-Reese's indecision between Amber and David. I mean, really. It's a love triangle and all but it's kind of obv. who she should stay with.
-Plot pacing. It was a little too slow for me, but it was okay.
-Julian's pressure towards Reese about her bisexuality. He was being a little too pressuring about Reese coming out. I mean, there's nothing wrong with that, but honestly, I think it sort of increased her bias towards Amber.
-How the racism of Chinese people was focused. I think Malinda was trying to show that people were assholes that made fun of Chinese people for no reason, but really? I know there's racism here and there, but oh-ho, in this book, it was like FOCUSED. Like a focus in a frickin' conic section. And this whole setting is in the future, too. Even if two years in the future. The racism shouldn't be that strong.

I liked:
-The whole, general, sci-fi thing. It's cool. After you read Adaptation, Malinda will definitely have you believing in conspiracies.
-Those twists and turns. Just wow.
-The ending. I don't think there's gonna be a third book, though.
-How the topic of bisexuality isn't focused, but still focused. Get what I mean? Like, usually, when authors write about homo, or bisexuality, they make it a BIG deal. Malinda Lo, though, added bisexuality like how it really is in the real world right now-- no big deal, love who you want to love.

Malinda Lo's a great sci-fi author. Definitely give Inheritance a try if you liked Adaptation!

Quotes

Book Review: Across the Universe by Beth Revis.

Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)Across the Universe by Beth Revis.
Book Summary: A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Liana's Summary: Amy had to choose. To leave her home with her parents, or stay-- but without her parents. Of course she went with them. She wakes up to find herself aboard a spaceshift with curiously strange people and a fake sun, fake rain, and a leader-- a tyrant. Eldest. When she meets Elder, the Eldest-to-be, everything goes for a turn.

Rate(1-10): 8

There were two reasons that I read this book:
-Looking forward to read the rest of the series. Heard Shades of Earth was really good!
-People were raving about it, and I'm just like, oh..

And that's it..

There were many things that I liked and didn't like about this book.

I liked:
-Beth Revis's science-fiction-ness. It's been a while since I'd read a sci-fi.
-Her writing. The author just sort of captivates you with her writing and she sort of pours her emotion into it, and we can really tell if it's Amy or Elder that's talking.
-The whole general plot. There were a fair amount of twists, and in my opinion, I think they were all very well organized.
-Harley. LOL. He was the only character that I actually liked..

I disliked:
-Amy. She's annoying and her attitude stinks.
-Elder. He's clingy and annoying. Just a bit insecure but I don't dislike him for that-- in fact, I appreciate his insecurity because it makes him a bit more realistic than the standard confident, hot, fictional cocky guys..
-Their names. WHY AMY AND WHY ELDER JUST--
-The romance. It was all too fast for me. I don't think that Amy really fell for him as much as Elder fell for her, but....... oh well.

That's really just it. I hope the romance develops a little more in the next two books, because I am definitely planning to finish this trilogy sometime soon!

Quotes~

"..frexing chance.."

"..and all I want to do is seize her, crush her against me, feel her lips with mine."

Just stop

"..there is nothing between us at all."

"Whoever this Jason is, I want to kill him."

this is why I dislike Elder

"That's all, I tell myself, that's all."

Book Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi. (Shatter Me #2)

Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi.
(Shatter Me #2)
Book Summary:
tick
tick
tick
tick
tick
it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

Liana's Summary: Juliette anticipates war. So does everyone else at Omega Point. She's grown closer to those at Omega Point, the one place that she can call home where everyone is like her, with abilities.. 'gifts'. She's finally free from Warner's grasp, but that doesn't mean he won't come back and try to find her. Still, she is cursed with her lethal touch, not being able to touch anyone-- except for Adam and Warner-- the boy she loves and the boy that tried to kill the boy she loves. Even if she can touch both of them, it doesn't mean that there won't be consequences. Consequences that, no matter how much she doesn't want to hear it, she will find out about.

Rate(1-10): 9

Alas, I finally got my hands on this book. Wow. Just wow. Woooooow. Well, if you haven't read the first book, go ahead and read this review, but I promise that most of it won't make sense at all. SO GO READ THE FIRST BOOK. JUST READ IT. JUST STOP DOING WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING AND FIND THE EBOOK ONLINE OR GO ON AMAZON AND ORDER IT OR RUN TO YOUR NEARBY BOOKSTORE AND JUST DEMAND THAT YOU BUY IT IMMEDIATELY AND CUT THAT LONG LINE OF PEOPLE AND GET TO THE VERY VERY FRONT AND PAY (OR NOT) AND RUN HOME AND READ IT So just read the first book.

So, first of all, the novella Destroy Me was really helpful. It let me look into Warner's soul and see that he wasn't such a bad guy after all. You don't have to read it, but it just gives you a sense of anticipation if you do.

Even if Warner didn't come in until the middle of the book, I still feel as if he's the most important character in the book (besides Juliette, of course). He has so much depth to him, it's just-- wow. If there's any reason to read this book, it'd be him. He's a character with DEPTH, like I said.

Warner basically makes the love triangle interesting. I'm sort of torn now, between Adam and Warner. I opened this book knowing that some people have already converted to Team Warner, and maybe that's influenced my thoughts the whole entire time. But nope, I definitely do NOT hate Warner anymore. Adam is a nice guy, except it's just that he's a reckless shithead sometimes. LOL. They're just both so HOTTTTT

I just need to dedicate a paragraph to Kenji. Even though he's not THAT much of an important character, I JUST LOVE KENJI. Best. Character. Ever. In the first book, I thought he was just some annoying perv, but now that I get to know him, he's AWESOME. Ohmygosh.

Juliette is a broken soul. There, I had to say it. The months in the asylum broke her, I think. And she's just..

Well, I have to say that it was partly because of Tahereh Mafi's writing style. It's just absolutely amazing I can't even. It has a ridiculously AWESOME voice that is a lot like that of Patrick Ness.. I swear, one of the BEST WRITERS EVER. Her writing is what gives Juliette her voice.

I don't know if it's a coincidence but this is the third book that I've read in a ROW where the dude is secretly whipped by his abusive father/caretaker. And then the girl just marvels over his scars blah blah blah. It's a little overused. Yep, just had to point that out..

I enjoyed this book greatly, but I have to say that the first book was much more interesting, since the plot developed very quickly at great amounts. Usually, the second books of series are just the 'preparing-for-war' books, and yes, Unravel Me was like that. There was tension on every single page and I loved it. But I wish that the plot had developed just a teeny bit more. There were a few twists, though, and those were just shocking.(Pretend I said that in Anderson's voice.)

The ending was totally unexpected-- it was sort of a cliffhanger, but then not really. I just can't wait for the next book! I'm eager for the next novella. CAN THE COVER AND TITLE REVEALS HAPPEN ALREADY GOSH

This series has so far been wonderful and I can't wait to see what happens next! Definitely a recommendation!

Quotes!

"Warner is standing not 20 feet away from me."

"He has dimples."

"Hey!"

"Someone closes a hand over my mouth."

"You came back for me,"

“I'm not blind, okay? On a purely physical level? Yeah, you're pretty sexy-- and that suit you have to wear all the time doesn't hurt. But even if you didn't have that 'I kill you if I touch you' thing going on, you are definitely not my type. And more importantly, I'm not some perverted asshole," he says. "I take my job seriously. I get real shit done in this world, and I like to think people respect me for it.”

And this is why I love Kenji

"And I'd really appreciate it if you'd grow the hell up and stop walking around like the world crapped on your only roll of toilet paper. Because it's stupid,”

No one needs to remind me how much I love Kenji

"Hey--good luck,"

"Aaron."

"You," he says to me, his hands gripping me tighter now, "are one of the bravest, strongest people I've ever met. You have the best heart, the best intentions--"

"Kill. Or be killed."

I can't be the only one who thought of Hunger Games

That she isn't the only one that Maxon likes.

Rate(1-10): 9.5

Ah, another one of my highly anticipated reads, finally devoured by me. (That rhymes! Sort of..)

Anyways, after I finished The Selection, after that ending left me open-mouthed, I knew I had to get The Elite. And alas.. my hands have gotten themselves on this beautiful, beautiful book.

As usual, Kiera Cass wrote with grace and captivated me in her writing and plot organization. There were a handful of twists that shocked me greatly and had my mouth hanging open.

The main character, America, is absolutely FEISTY. Not to mention stubborn, and just absolutely awesome. I know I loved her in the first book for her strength and stubbornness, but now her indecision has driven me to a point in which I'm not so sure anymore.

This love triangle has gotten to a point of tension, where it just leaves me somewhere in the middle.. I just need the next book now to help me decide. This indecision is unacceptable! I should have seen this coming, LOL, with Kiera Cass writing a blog post about shipping Asperica.. I mean, Maxon is a nice guy, but very, very indecisive. I just don't know what to think anymore.

The covers are gorgeous, and I can't wait to see book 3's cover! I just can't believe I have to wait some more for the next book, ugh. Can't wait.

This was a great read.

Quotes!
"And you know.. you know.."

no she does not know
in order for her to know you must say it out loud!!!

"Listen, you have to promise not to say anything about this."

And Maxon told her that same exact thing -facepalm-

"Somebody's jealous,"

Is it just me or is Aspen being flirtatious

"...and slapped her as hard as I could across her face."

SLAP DAT BITCH TO DEATH

"I thought you were mine,"

Nope, just go away omg.

"..but it's the same way I felt when you broke up with me."

You tell him, girl!

Book Review: Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi.

Destroy Me (Shatter Me #1.5)Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi.
(Shatter Me #1.5)
Book Summary: Perfect for the fans of Shatter Me who are desperately awaiting the release of Unravel Me, this novella-length digital original will bridge the gap between these two novels from the perspective of the villain we all love to hate, Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

In Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me, Juliette escaped from The Reestablishment by seducing Warner—and then putting a bullet in his shoulder. But as she’ll learn in Destroy Me, Warner is not that easy to get rid of. . .

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

Set after Shatter Me and before its forthcoming sequel, Unravel Me,Destroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

Liana's Summary: Warner, after Juliette's escape, is angered and devastated, and most of all determined more than ever to find her, and get her back-- and put a bullet through Adam Kent's face. When he finds Juliette's journal, he tears through it, only to discover her pain and loneliness. Meanwhile, Warner's father forms some plans for Juliette, plans that Warner absolutely despises, and will do anything to stop.

Wow, wow, wow! Tahereh Mafi, what an amazing writer!

Ever since I've read SHATTER ME, I've been dying to read UNRAVEL ME, and I'm so glad that I discovered DESTROY ME before I started to read book 2. This was a novella, in Warner's point of view, obviously, and I have to admit (although grudgingly) that Warner has a heart after all. However, I know which side of the love triangle I'm on, *fosho*. LOL.

Anyways, yeah, great series! Tahereh Mafi is such an amazing writer, so everyone should check this out!

And here I go, starting out this reviews like I start many other reviews: This was a recommendation. Heard lots of good things about this book. Yep. LOL.

I liked this book lots. When I heard so many good things about it, I knew I had to check it out.

The cover and title are absolutely fabulous, and they were the aspects of this book that drew me in at first. Dad barged into the room as I was reading this and he grabbed it and started accusing me of having a dark and wicked mind.. LOL.

At first, I'll have to admit, it wasn't really that good until after the first 100 pages. (Things started to escalate from there, so yipee!)It probably had to do with the fact that I'm absolutely SICK of the dystopian genre-- and I shouldn't really be reading something in the same genre as the story that I'm currently writing, in case I get influenced.. I'll probably go back to the dystopian genre one day when I'm honestly sick and tired of Fantasy and Contemporary. Anyways, when I had my first glance at this book, I had no idea that it was going to be dystopian at all, but, it was really good, still.

This book is actually what I consider to be 'semi-dystopian' where the world isn't really different from our modern world today, but still quite different. It's set in the future, where Barack Obama is NOT president. So that's one hint that it's in the future. Another one is is the camps. The camps are a terrible place to be, kind of like the Japanese internment camps many decades ago. Except, instead of innocent Japanese people, the camps have kids in them. Kids that are segregated into groups by sex and 'color.' You're either green, blue, red, orange, or yellow, and that technically defines your danger to the adults. Usually in dystopian worlds, the adults are always unreasonable.

The ending. It was the ending that totally got me going. All I really wanted to do was scream and hurl the book across the room at the ending, but what I did was sob. omg. I can't. The ending is what makes this book a true tragedy.. to me, anyway. It was definitely a twist ending, fosho.

The romance is absolutely adorbs and completely WONDERFUL. I wouldn't have liked this book without the romance. The romance is why the ending happened at all.

Character Discussions-

Ruby- She's a likable protagonist, and she's independent, too, but she gets scared easily and sometimes the readers can't help but be just a tiny bit annoyed.

Chubs- His nickname is awesome, 'cept I like Charles so much better. LOL. He's absolutely AWESOME. Chubs is such a great character I can't even. He seems to be the 'I-wanna-look-like-I-don't-care-but-I-actually-do' guy. He's loyal, mostly.

Liam- I love Liam. His Southern accent, the way he says 'darlin',' the way his blond hair curls against his neck. Ermahgerd. He's so nice and an AMAZING leader.

Suzume- She's a wonderful little girl, smart and optimistic. No one can dislike her!

Overall, I enjoyed this book! Can't wait for the next one in the series.
