FF 2012 Feature & Follow #122The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read.

Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

Well, sometimes, when the book is really good, I'm really happy when I see something like that happen in another book, as long as the author uses their own style- not just like, Oh, I'm going to change the character names and use the same exact plot and call it my own. I'm sorry to say this but I really hate fanfictions. I just HATE HATE HATE fanfictions. Not only because I hate erotica (ahem ahem- most fanfictions ARE like that.), it's because fanfictions always run wild and they ruin the characters I already got to know. So yeah. Anyways.

If you follow me, just comment below and I'll be more than glad to follow back! Happy Friday and happy reading!

  1. I don't really see the allure of fanfiction either. They just mess with already established stories and characters.

  2. I'm not big on fanfic either, mostly because the quality is always so bad. Anything totally recycled is un-appealing as well. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  4. I am not a fan-fic fan at all. I don't read any of that stuff. But I don't mind a new spin on other stories if the author twists it around a little. Some stories are so universal that it’s almost a given that they will be retold, like The Iliad and the Odyssey. The story is an archetype of the hero’s journey.

  5. Being a huge tv junkie and getting obsessed with shows led me to reading fanfics at an early age, lol. Sometimes shows just don't go in the direction I want them to, so it can be a good outlet to get my mind off of it. There are some good ones, some (not some... a lot of) bad ones. But when I see them published, it's just weird. They should just stay on the net. Agreed with you, changing names and keeping plots is a huge no-no. Old follower! :)

  6. Hopping through. I like well written fan fiction, which is few and far between, but does exist. Most of it is awful though.

  8. You know, I've never read any fanfiction and if it's all erotica like you say, I don't think I'll bother! New follower. Here's mine: My FF

  9. I have actually read fanfic that was OK, but I do not agree on fanfic authors actually publishing what they've written and earn money on it.

  13. Nice!! I have to agree as well. It's different to be influenced but to actually rehash and just change a few details is too obvious and sloppy.

  16. I agree with you about the first part. I do like fanfiction as long as they stay true to the original characters. I mean when you have a bad guy in a book, I expect to stay that way in the fanfiction and not for him to have a sudden change of heart and become one of the good ones just because...
