Book Review: The Other Side of the Island by Allegra Goodman.

The Other Side of the Island
The Other Side of the Island by Allegra Goodman.
Book Summary:  From New York Times bestselling author Allegra Goodman comes a post apocalyptic novel about love, loss, and the power of human choice.Honor and her parents have been reassigned to live on Island 365 in the Tranquil Sea. Life is peaceful there :the color of the sky is regulated by Earth Mother, a corporation that controls New Weather, and it almost never rains. Everyone fits into their rightful and predictable place. . . .Except Honor. She doesn't fit in, but then she meets Helix, a boy with a big heart and a keen sense for the world around them. Slowly, Honor and Helix begin to uncover a terrible truth about life on the Island: Sooner or later, those who are unpredictable disappear . . . and they don't ever come back.

Liana's Summary: Honor moves from her old home to a new place- a place where Earth Mother has everything under control. Things seem perfect and organized, but when Honor meets a boy named Helix, and he explains things that no one would ever think about, Honor tries to make the best out of the information- and that can lead to something, or something else.

Rate(1-10): 8

Actually, when I first saw this book, it was in the YA section. I'm not sure why. It's pretty thin and there's not any romance at all. They're just a two 14 year olds. But I guess that's why I didn't like it enough to make it a 9-10. NO ROMANCE. Don't get me wrong, I hate porn. Anyway, yeah. Pretty much, these were my reactions towards the main character:

1-Uh-huh.

2-WHAT THE FAUK DO YOU THINK YOU DOIN', YOU FAGGOT?!
3- So brave. ;__; Yet so ignorant still.
4-Good. I like you now! (:

Basically, you see, I hated her very dearly in the middle section of the book. And it was pretty much easy to do so because, well, um, it's not in first person. I'm pretty confident that this novel is supposed to be a children's Dystopian story, not a Young Adult. But I guess adults could enjoy it too?

I think that Helix is actually pretty cute. But then he's not THAT cute when he goes: " YOU DON'T WANT TO BE FRIENDS ANYMORE? FINE." And I was like, do something, you idiot! BRING ON SOME ROMANCE. DON'T LET HER GO JUST BECAUSE SHE DON'T WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND.

So, yeah, here are some quote reactions:

"There were many rules at school and many classes: painting, math, copying, science, gymnastics, music, weaving, and, of course, geography, Earth and Weather."

OH. My goodness.

"Don't take that tone of voice with me."
OOOU. YEAH YOU LISTEN TO YOUR DADDY.

"It was Helix Thompson,.."
WHAT IS THIS, SOMEONE'S TALKING TO HER?! AT LAST.

"Brother and Sister were swear words."
What kind of Dystopia is this.

"Helix Hephaestus Thompson."
That's cute. ._. Hephaestus as in Greek Mythology? Awk.

"His parents were taken."
GASP. NOOOOO! Poor him. D:

"Time for glassblowing."
Now, these classes. How do they help again?

"Their parents have been taken."
NOW SEE WHAT YOU DID. YOU FAG.

"You are home."
o_______________o Scary lady!

"..and slapped Helix's face."
:O HOW COULD YOU.

"Out of the shadows stepped her father."
;____; Gonna cry.

"I am the Forecaster..."
WHAT THE FREAK. NO WAY.

"You are afraid of me."
OH YES SHE IS. (:

And, basically, out of the 280 pages in this book, that is basically all I bookmarked.

So, now, I'm moving on to The Grimm Legacy. Good. Because I'm sick of not reading romance for one book in a row. And I was so sure that Helix and Honor were gonna do something! Like kiss! KISS ON THE CHEEK AT LEAST. But nooo, they knew each other for 4 years and then they did nothing! Sigh.

And yet, this is still a YA novel for some reason. Allegra Goodman sure knows how to create a Dystopia!

  1. Having seen it, my overwhelming feeling is not exaltation but sadness. I look at this maddening pastiche and think of all the great movies he might have made.
